April 2026

Posted Wednesday 1st April, 2026

We’re writing this update in the middle of our lambing season here on the farm. The pregnant ewes seem to have grouped together ,and decided to give birth several at a time, or not at all! This isn’t ideal as our lambing shed only has a handful of pens for us to keep newborns and mothers together. We do this until we’re happy that lambs are feeding and the mother has enough milk to support her growing family.

One thing we are very grateful for is that the very wet weather we had so far this year has (for the time being) has been swapped for lovely blue skies and sunshine, making turning the sheep out into the field a much easier transition for everyone. The first of this year’s lambs born early March and are already out enjoying the first of the spring sunshine and doing very well!

Last month we mentioned we’d had two litters of pigglets with one more due. We’re really pleased that they’re all here now and birthed as expected. We have a total of thirty piglets which will make their way down to the woodland once they’ve been weaned from their mothers and start their adventure in the woodland here at Fordhall.

To add to the excitement, we’ve also had the first of our 2026 calves born, the very first being a lovely young bull calf who joined us in the middle of March. April promsises to be a busy one with the cattle as but hoping they don’t require as much help as the sheep and pigs when giving birth! Our suckler herd of 53 cattle should all be expecting youngsters across the spring and summer so once again we’ll keep you all posted how we progress!
