January 2026
Posted Thursday 1st January, 2026
This month is really exciting for us as it starts off with our ewes being scanned on 2nd January. This will be when we see how our new Aberblack X rams got on with our ewes!
We’ll find out which ewes are pregnant and how many lambs each is expecting. Some will have just one, many will have twins which is ideal, and some will even have triplets!
Our Assistant Farm Manager Shawn will gather all the ewes ready for Graham our scanning man. The process can be as quick as just one hour to do the 175 mules ewes, but that’s if the ewes behave themselves - otherwise it could take a bit longer! Each will be marked with a colour to indicate how many lambs they’re expecting, and we add those up as we go.
Last year we were expecting 197 lambs across 105 pregnant ewes. A rate of 1.86 lambs per ewe which we were pleased with. Have a guess as to how many you think we’ll be expecting this year and we’ll let you know what the scanning results are next month!
The weather in December was very mild, and although quite wet at times the ground isn’t too muddy. We’re expecting January to be a little colder and possibly to bring some snow. Our animals don’t mind that though. We’re well prepared for the winter months as we have new land where we’re growing a mix of grass and rape/kale for grazing the sheep over winter months, and we always store hay from the spring and summer for winter grazing. Our cattle love this!
