March 2026

Posted Sunday 1st March, 2026

March brings a busy hands-on period on the farm with the welcome of new life.

We are expecting eighty more lambs than last year which is wonderful news for the farm. It also brings its challenges! Around the clock care will have to be extra vigilant to make sure all ewes are progressing towards the end of their pregnancy as we'd hope. We also have a record number of potential triplets this year, meaning that we'll pay extra attention to those particular ewes to make sure they've got enough milk to support everyone.

We are also due to start our calving, with several of our pregnant cows having expectant due dates of the end of March. The cows are slightly easier and less hands on to manage than the lambs when it comes to giving birth. Particular members of our suckler herd are 'of a certain age', with one particular cow '500 035' being 14 years old and having had many years of successful births here on the farm.

Two sets of piglets were born in February, and another sow is due any day now. The timings of these litters of piglets is a little too close together for our liking, but a very eager young boar introduced to the herd in September had a lot of charm, and get up and go!

Down in the woodland the pigs have been busy exploring and rooting away in the undergrowth, despite the heavy rain. The canopy of leaves in the established trees above them has given them some protection against the heavier downpours we've been having.

Although we had a very wet start to the year, making things a little difficult on the ground, the extended day light hours has given us confidence that spring is just around the corner, and we're really looking forward to it.
