October an exciting month for our two tups! At the beginning of the month we’ll move them into the field with our breeding ewes, 160 of them! In an ideal world each ewe will be pregnant with twins as each ewe has exactly two teats. With twins each lamb will claim one side of the udder, allowing them to feed equally without competition.
Having twins also means they tend to be born the ideal size. Single lambs are often too large at birth and so need assistance, while triplets can be undersized and weaker. We’ll learn how many we’re expecting in February when the ewes are scanned. We’ll let you know!
We also have two Gloucester Old Spots who are pregnant. We don’t know how many they’re pregnant with at the moment. Pigs tend to be much easier as they’re self-sufficient when birthing. They’re in the pig arcs which are close to the farmhouse. You’ve probably seen them if you’ve ever visited, and if you time your next visit right you’ll get to see these little piglets too!
We will be weening our calves next month. They’re a good age now so don’t mind this too much and will be happy again after a few days. It also means the cows have the opportunity to put condition on ready for the winter.
We have one more cow due to calve this month. This will be the last this year. We plan to share a photo of Mum with her calf in next months update, but in the meantime Shawn wanted to share a photo of his favourite cow who recently had a calf. They're a Red Aberdeen Angus and have a beautiful copper colour to them.
We've also included a recent photo of our piglets from last month, suckling from their Mum. They're doing very well!
Great news – we had our TB test in September and passed with flying colours. It’s always a nerve-wracking time so we’re absolutely delighted.
More good news as our grass has grown really well over the last few weeks. We’ll have some late silage cuts coming up to make up for the loss of grass over the summer. After the never-ending series of heatwaves this summer, we’re chuffed to bits!
